My 2nd year of teaching a student of mine said hi to me in target and I said her name and hi back. The dad flipped out and called security cause he thought I was stalking his kid cause he had never met me. Luckily I had my school id on me.

I remember teachers being in the news for being fired after posting pictures of themselves on social media with a beer or cocktail in their hands.

Yet when I was a student we had teachers who would smoke outside the school gate with no care that students and their parents would see them.

I ran into a student at target carrying nothing except a loaf of sourdough and a 12 pack. 😂😂 the rest of the year, when he class would get rowdy, she’d ask if I needed to stop at target on the way home.

this stims back to the patriarchy. when teaching turned into a "women's job" it carried on the purity culture and puritanical ideals of the time. we unfortunately still live in them, even though we have many men as teachers too.

I frequently run into my old teachers at the local bars. It was also common knowledge that a certain teacher would call in Mondays after football 🤷♀️

One of my students parents own a liquor store. I get a great discount every time I go. Love that lady

I was told it was unprofessional to have a part time job during the school year. Also, sitting down. Apparently, sitting down is unprofessional.

When we got our field placements at my college for student teaching, the dean of the college got up in front of all of us and told us a story about how she had a family emergency where her husband collapsed in the morning in their house. fully unconscious. ended up in the ER, and as soon as he got on the ambulance she left and went to work. And that was just her cute little anecdote about how as a teacher your life doesn't matter. your loved ones don't matter. And teaching is more important than everything else. and I was just like, that will never be for me. And guess what? I'm a damn good teacher, I also take days off for my kids. And I absolutely would never drop one of my kids, my sister, my boyfriend, anyone off at the ER after collapsing in the house and then be like deuces I got to go to work.

I was terrified of doing anything that might be perceived as unprofessional. Now I run a Romantasy book club with moms from my school and go on vacations with them. Being in my early 20s vs late 30s is such a wildly different experience

yes, still gets brought up in college teacher prep programs. more importantly I think it falls in line with the infantilizing of teachers (especially females), right there with admins micromanaging the teacher's day.

“It’s not fair for you to drink coffee or eat food at your desk since your students aren’t allowed to eat or drink in the classroom” is what I’ve been told.

well back in Little House On The Prairie days, teachers didn't marry or do anything untoward... so it started long before us my friend

Actually it's always been like this. back in the day you couldn't be married and be a teacher. You couldn't be seen in public on a date. my grandmother had to quit teaching when she found out she was pregnant with my mom. She also had to wear a dress and high heels.

I got in trouble in 1999 for not wearing panty hose under my dress pants and lipstick during student teaching. I had to show her the panty hose was in fact nude and I was wearing it. Now I wear jeans and a staff, math or spirit shirt and tennis shoes. Geesh!
