YESS!!! 8th grade Algebra here. The group of kids I just got came from a teacher that didn’t require them to show ANY work. The motto was “as long as you get the answer.” I’m sorry…what?!?!?! Literally have been driven to tears from having to break all the bad habits! 😓

Erasable pens exist. Also when I was in high school I was told adding units is only necessary if the problem involved multiple units.

I sucked at math all through school, I RELIGIOUSLY showed my work bc most teachers would at least give me partial credit if I did the steps correctly but got the numbers wrong. I never understood why students wouldn’t??

As an 8th grade math teacher… I fight for my life to teach them these things. Like bruhhhhh there’s LINES ON THE PAPER FOR A REASON USE THEM! Honestly, at this point I’d just love for them to continue to carry their variable with the coefficient, I don’t understand why they think they can just give up on x. It’s what you’re looking for 😫😫😫😫😫😫

Physics teacher: Your work is an act of communication. You are communicating with yourself, your teacher, and anyone else who looks at your work. It needs to be clear and your steps need to be obvious. If you're making an assumption, make that explicit. Do all your math first (manipulation of variables, etc). Plug in numbers last.

We have an expectation that our students will show all of their math down the page, one algebraic step per line. We tell them this is important because we are trying to teach them how to identify their own errors. In our classes, mistakes are expected, respected, inspected, and corrected. The number of times that statement gets repeated finally burrows its way into their brains and they understand why we show as many steps as we do. Some kids take longer to get that than others, but eventually, they are showing their steps like true mathematicians.

Our elementary teachers want the kids to write problems in that ridiculous expanded form from left to right, then in the high school they basically abandoned all of that and went back to pretty much regular problem solving.

I also have a model homework assignment that I have digitally created holes on so that they understand which side of the paper is the front. It completely shows them all of the expectations about how homework should be set up so that they have space to write corrections and notes to themselves about any errors they've made.
