It is reading. I also read many podcasts and I read Ariana grande’s new album every day.

Audiobook fans get SO DEFENSIVE about this. Like babe the narrator is reading. You’re doing what my son does at bedtime, which is listening to someone read. This is not complicated.

as a librarian it does count ✨ it activates all the same core parts of your brain, additionally graphic novels uses more of your brain than either

Why is everyone so mad he isn’t saying you didn’t CONSUME the same story. You obviously did. But you didn’t READ anything you LISTENED. He even said there is no shame in it, but you didn’t “READ” the book. Think about if you read the lyrics and sheet music for a song. Did you LISTEN to the song? No. Do you know the lyrics just the same as someone who did, YES. That doesn’t make it the same thing.

I always feel like im being punked on this topic like why are we trying to redefine the word “reading” to accommodate people who don’t like to read

it's not "reading" by definition but it's still consuming the literature with virtually all of the same benefits and the same experience, someone hearing the words instead of looking at them doesn't change anything lol

Read has multiple definitions as language tends to evolves. If you can understand the phrases “read the room” or “you read my mind” then you should understand that you can read with audiobooks.

I agree! People who listen to books count them as “books read” and we say it’s not the same - they get BIG MAD 🤣 I don’t “read music” I listen to music.

As someone who’s always been a reader and started listening to audiobooks recently.. it’s the exact same content just through a different sense. You may not have “read” it but you have fully consumed it just in a different way

Do people not realize there are reading levels? Like people who listen to books won’t know how to actually read without messing up words and knowing the words and how the pronunciation is. Reading is a skill that can improve, listening is very different

I’m a librarian and every librarian I know says it counts. I love books and reading so much but I do not have the time to sit down and read like I used to so I do both. I read physical books and whenever I am driving to work or going on a walk I listen to an audiobook. This way I can be reading a book even when I’m not able to physically sit down with one. If you sit down with a physical book or listen to the audiobook it is the EXACT same story no matter how you consume it.

This whole dumb argument is semantic. We don’t have a word in English that’s equivalent to “reading with your ears” so people just saying reading because saying you consumed a book sounds dumb. Someone who listened to an entire audiobook can definitely say they read a book and everyone understands want they mean and people trying to gatekeep and say this isn’t equivalent to reading with your eyes are mad because they only read 1 or 2 books a year and want to feel superior to the audiobook readers who read dozens.

if I asked someone "have you read x book?" and they said "yes, I just finished it!" and we had a whole conversation about the plot, the characters, how unexpected the ending was, how the author used literary devices like foreshadowing, irony, and symbolism. could you tell which one of us listened to the audiobook vs which one didn't? no! because at the end of the day it doesn't fucking matter

So I guess blind people who listen to audiobooks they don’t read either right??There are words and information in the book, and we have both ways of getting this information. We can get it through our eyes, and we can get her through our ears. If I read a book with my eyes, and then someone will read the same book with their ears, we can still talk fully about the book and everything that was happening in the book, because this person read this book too.
