Box breathing during a winter sunset in Dordrecht, the Netherlands. The sky looked absolutely beautiful, and I couldn't resist recording another breathing exercise before the sun disappeared. One thing I really like about winter is how early the sun sets. I don't have to wait until late in the evening to catch golden hour, and sometimes the colors in the sky are just incredible. For this guided breathing session, I'm using the classic 4-4-4-4 box breathing technique. Here's how it works: Breathe in gently for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 seconds, breathe out slowly for 4 seconds, and hold again for 4 seconds before repeating. That's one complete cycle every 16 seconds, or 3.75 breaths per minute. I've practiced so many different breathing techniques over the years, and box breathing is still one of my favorites when I want something that requires a little concentration. What makes this technique different from equal breathing is that you're not just inhaling and exhaling. You're also adding two breath holds, which means there are four different phases to focus on. Personally, I find that this makes it easier to stop thinking about everything else for a while. When I'm concentrating on the rhythm, there's simply less room for all the other thoughts going through my head. Box breathing is often recommended for managing stress and improving focus. And there's some interesting research suggesting that slow, controlled breathing can help reduce perceived stress and influence heart rate variability. However, most studies investigate slow breathing more generally, so we can't assume that the exact 4-4-4-4 pattern is necessarily better than other breathing techniques. One thing I always recommend is not forcing the breath holds. If four seconds feels uncomfortable, shorten the counts or simply breathe in and out without holding your breath. The goal isn't to make the exercise as difficult as possible. Try this guided breathing exercise with me and let me know how you feel afterward! I offer private 1-on-1 breath coaching, individual consultations, and access to my monthly library of longer guided breathing sessions. I keep the number of clients limited so I can give everyone enough personal attention. Interested? Feel free to contact me at diederikcornelis@gmail.com. Disclaimer: This breathing exercise is intended for relaxation and educational purposes only. Never force your breathing or breath holds. Stop if you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or uncomfortable. If you have health concerns, consult a healthcare professional before practicing. Never practice breath-holding exercises in or near water. #breathingexercises #breathingtechniques #boxbreathing #guidedbreathing #ademhalingsoefeningen
