Malaika Chitre, an Indian-origin woman from Dayton, New Jersey, and her longtime friend Navam Kaul, a Nepali-American from Sayreville, New Jersey both 24 and 2024 Rutgers University graduates were f*tally st₹uck by a southbound No. 4 train at the Spring Street subway station in Lower Manhattan around 3:14–3:15 a.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026. A bystander video that has circulated widely online appears to show the pa!r calmly s!tt!ng on the tracks (roadb£d) just before the train arrived. According to law-enforcement sources and an MTA/inc!dent report, one of them (reportedly Kaul) may have fall£n or climbed onto the tracks f!rst, with the other (Chitre) going down in an apparent att£mpt to h€lp; Chitre was described as l*ughing and pulling Kaul toward her in the f!nal moments. The train operator saw them, applied the em£rgency brake, but could not stop in time. Both were pron*unced d£ad at the scene. About 100 passengers were ev*cuated. Police are inv£stigating the circumstances, including the possibility of int*xic*tion (sources suggest they may have been so imp*ired they did not r£alize the d*nger), an acc*d£ntal fall/rescue att£mpt, or other factors. No su***de notes were found, though su***de has not been fully rul£d out. Chitre worked as an operations specialist at Acadia Pharmaceuticals (and had recently started a pharmacy program); Kaul worked as a financial data analyst at Bloomberg. The exact sequence of events remains under investigation.
