Sometimes I look back at that year and genuinely wonder how I did it. I bought this house when I was seven months pregnant with my second son. Every spare minute went into making it livable before Leon arrived. I knew that once he was born, I’d have to step away from renovating for a while, so I kept pushing until the very last day. The morning I went into labor, I was still here working on the house. I couldn’t afford to hire people for everything, so most of it was done with my own hands and with the help of my family. I’ll never be able to thank my dad enough. He showed up day after day, never complaining, teaching me, helping me, and believing in this dream as much as I did. I still remember bringing my baby home while the house was far from finished. The plumbing had only just been connected, there were tools everywhere, and every room still needed work. It didn’t matter - for the first time, it was ours. Looking back now, I realize I wasn’t just renovating a house. I was building a home for my boys during one of the hardest chapters of my life. Somehow, through the exhaustion, the uncertainty, the fear - we pulled through. There’s still so much left to do - the basement, the upstairs bathroom, the backyard - but I’m excited to get back into it.
