I genuinely think NANA would be a completely different story if Ai Yazawa weren’t a woman. The way it portrays femininity and the specific struggles that come with being a woman is so painfully accurate and realistic that I genuinely can’t imagine a man writing those experiences with the same depth and understanding.

I don’t rlly care for the take that men shouldn’t be watching nana because if anything it benefits them as much as it does women. There’s so many relatable characters of both genders I think I really benefits both sides to see that yes being in your 20’s is rough life can get hard and depressing

I'm actually glad that I discovered nana myself, just on a random tuesday, finding something to watch, caught my attention and watched it, I even watched the live action first and then watched the whole series the next day

I think it's very well written in the sense that if you have your shit together all of the characters will start reading as completely insufferable. I watched it when I was 18 for the first time and loved it, watched it again at 23 and couldn't get through any episode without feeling frustrated. The characters serve greatly as a mirror, if you see your reflection you know you have to change, much like characters from Bojack for example. I think the author is fantastic though, she did a great job representing negative traits and depressing themes in a way that's not degrading or infantalizing.

Yazawa is a brilliant writer, and her work will transcend time. Cause even though the show is based in the early 2000s, the experience of a 20 year old never changes regardless of time and societal shifts. Watching Nana is a good first step in navigating adulthood, in a world where everyone seems to have it put together. Nana K thinks Nana O has it all figured out with a perfect relationship, but in reality she's just as much of a mess with unaddressed trauma.

Nana genuinely felt like you were going on that journey with the characters. Felt like an entire lifetime stuck in 47 episodes. I learned so much about myself watching Nana and seeing so much of myself in Nobu. Wanting to appear nice instead of focussing on actually being a genuinely good guy. Been about 2 years since I watched Nana and it’s definitely more than improved my outlook on women, life but also myself

I think it’s really because all of the characters aren’t really “characters” as they are written as people. You can imagine meeting people like these in real life. There isn’t really an antagonist. Yeah, Takumi sucks and the cheating boyfriend bit sucked but they aren’t the big bad of the story, they’re just people who happen to be terrible and involved in the life of Hachi. As that’s how life can be for anyone. The problems Hachi faces aren’t completely unique to her like other stories, they’re problems anyone can face, and Hachi’s way of dealing with them is her way. Whether we agree with her or not.

i love nana so much. it genuinely made me cry every episode because the characters and their inner monologues were so accurate. especially for me, alot of hachis and nanas inner monologues hit SO close to home… they could never make me hate nana🥹

watching and reading Nana at 14 vs 22 yrs old (i'm 26 now lol) was SUCH a different experience and i honestly recommend people rewatch it at different points in their lives. when i was younger, i didn't like Hachi and couldn't understand why she made certain decisions, but when i rewatched it as an adult, i sympathized with and understood her soooo much more 😭 it's so relatable esp when it comes to friendships and romantic relationships. it definitely didn't help that i understood Nana and Ren's relationship on a personal level because i was in a situationship with a similar dynamic 😅 great vid as always, you nail it every time!!! <3
