In May 2007, Kenya Airways Flight 507 (a newly delivered Boeing 737-800) took off from Douala, Cameroon, in the middle of a pitch-black night while navigating around severe thunderstorms. Shortly after liftoff, the extremely domineering and overconfident captain made a critical error: he verbally announced that he was engaging the autopilot, but he never actually pressed the button to activate it. Believing the plane's computers were flying the aircraft, the captain took his hands off the controls. Without the autopilot engaged, the 737 slowly and silently began to bank to the right. Because they were flying in complete darkness with no visible horizon outside, the pilots suffered from severe spatial disorientation. The first officer, deeply intimidated by the captain's harsh leadership style, failed to monitor the flight instruments or speak up about the dangerous bank angle. When the aircraft reached a terrifying 50-degree right bank, the plane's bank angle warning alarm suddenly blared in the cockpit. Jolted in the darkness and completely confused, the panicked captain grabbed the controls and accidentally steered the plane even further to the right instead of leveling it out. The 737 rolled almost completely upside down and entered a fatal spiral dive, plunging into a dense mangrove swamp just miles from the airport and killing all 114 people on board. The investigation became a primary case study on the dangers of spatial disorientation and a complete breakdown of Crew Resource Management (CRM). It underscored the deadly consequences of a strict cockpit hierarchy where junior pilots are too afraid to challenge a captain, forcing global airlines to further reinforce that any pilot must aggressively intervene to save the aircraft. #KenyaAirways507 #AirCrashInvestigation #AviationHistory #fyp #Boeing737
