@drdeborahparenting: If saying "no" leads to another option, another explanation, or another round of negotiation, the decision is still open. And when the decision stays open, pushing becomes part of the process. Your child learns that asking again may produce a different answer. Here's what to do instead. Make the decision before you speak. If the item is staying at the store, say: "No. That stays at the store." Then let that decision guide what happens next. If your child asks again, argues, cries, or drops to the floor, keep the original answer in place. Continue from the same decision even when the reaction gets bigger. If you need to respond again, use the same answer: "No. That stays at the store." Then continue with what was already supposed to happen. If you were shopping, keep shopping. If it is time to leave, leave. If the item was unavailable, it stays unavailable. That is the pattern your child needs to experience. Asking again produces the same answer. Crying produces the same answer. The first answer holds. The Parenting OS gives you the full boundary system for what to say after no, what to do when your child keeps pushing, and how to carry the original decision through a tantrum with the same clarity and consistency.
