That's the type of living. Most of us are doing nowadays, because no one can afford our deductibles on our health insurance. And that those deductibles are so f****** high on purpose. To make sure that any of us that can't figure out a way to pay the bills afterwards, just refuse to get care. So that they pocket all the money that we pay for insurance without many of us ever using it. Healthcare is probably the biggest fraud. There he is in the u s bested by maybe only the government itself

When it comes to doing anything dangerous, you need to be able to assume the costs even hiking in regulated places. otherwise the incentive of whoever's managing such things and has to factor in those potential costs and distribute that risk among everyone. Usually in the form of a fee. That's not really fair. So in the case of emergency rescue, it should be a cost that is taken on by your insurance and adjusted for based off of your actual health.
