Do you still crave physical affection? The oxytocin and comfort that comes with that which our bodies just evolutionarily seem to crave? That’s one of the parts I find hard to resolve.

Once I learned that love does not just come from a romantic partnership…that’s when I could feel love in all the areas of my life such as my community like my parents and siblings and even friendships. Nature and self.

2 years celibate. I have great friends. Rebuilding my career. The patriarchal brainwashing is so strong and it’s going to take me a while but I persist! ✨

can it be the love I have for my patients ??... or sometimes I see a sweet moment between father and daughter/friends and my hearts bursts and breaks at the same time.

I’ve been doing this for some years now and I’m convinced love has infinite forms because I keep discovering more. The socially conditioned forms are so narrow and limiting and I believe that’s intentional.

The idealized form of romantic love is a toxic combination of what the Greeks called eros and mania. Lust, passion, obsession, and control. It is apparent in literature, movies, music. and attitudes in general. True love is much different. It encourages autonomy and helping each other, and doing what you can for someone, to help them be the best version of themselves.

when i had the realization that all feelings are built out of my own inner world, I stopped looking for it externally. now, I am so much more kind and loving to myself in a way a partner never was

This is such a wonderful reframe. It feels more authentic to who we are as humans also. For me, I too feel I have so much love to give and also desire to receive and for me romantic love was something I chose to "settle" for because I struggled to find deeper community I really wanted. I really worked hard to love myself and that saved me! While I knew it wasn't my deep desire to have a traditional relationship, I also felt that individualism killed community, so I wanted to try the traditional relationship. But since my marriage became abusive I realized I could not settle. I love myself and knew I deserve better. And now I actually do have deep community - especially with community elders, women who have been through similar things and built community and have so much wisdom and deep witnessing to offer. It's sooo much more satisfying to be seen my an elder in my community (especially queer elders) than validation from a man can offer. this also made me realize that romantic love the way patriarchy positions it is a bait and switch, it's a myth. The deep, love I was looking for was always ever available in Intergenerational community, not from any single person, but especially from men. I do not think most men I have come across in my life —from father, brother, S.O. or friends— knew how to love themselves or anybody else.

💯. And this takes soooooo long at least for me I’m only realizing at 38, I haven’t felt lonely alone in years though. But it still sucks a little when I find myself liking someone - usually they are taken anyway though lol

I am trying to build exactly what you suggest. Many barriers so far -such as people saying no thanks. Or asking for a monthly payment. Seeking friendships.

Bell hooks talks about a love ethics in her book all about love and it’s beautiful. Reinforcing a communal love that heals rather, in my mind, a romantic love that can be bit selfish.

I have discovered in my life, “romantic” love is a fallacy created by the French during the Renaissance. Sounds great! But not real.
