Opposition candidate Adama Barrow defeated long-time president Yahya Jammeh, who had ruled The Gambia since taking power in a 1994 military coup. Barrow won 43.3%, compared with Jammeh’s 39.6%, while Mama Kandeh received 17.1%. Jammeh initially accepted the result and conceded defeat, but later rejected the election and demanded a new vote. This created a political crisis that ended only after strong regional pressure from ECOWAS, including the threat and eventual use of military intervention. Jammeh finally left The Gambia for exile on 21 January 2017, allowing Barrow to assume the presidency.
