🖤 Destiny 🖤 :
my theory of Coraline is that back in the 1800s when the pink palace was first built it was during a time of mass disease the Beldam worked as an embalmer, stealing dead children's eyes to consume for witchcraft and personal gain while the parents never noticed because funerals were too expensive to question, using buttons specifically as an embalming technique to keep the dead eye sockets from collapsing inward. As medicine improved and fewer children died, she was forced to start taking them alive, eventually kidnapping a young boy whose father was so wealthy he had rented out most of the Pink Palace for them to live in. The father realized his son was missing from their home and immediately began searching day and night, hunting through every inch of the property until he discovered a hidden, blood-soaked basement, finding his son unconscious on a table right as the hunched-over Beldam consumed the boy's eyes. In a blind rage, the father beat her with a shovel, tied a metal rope around her neck, hung her, and threw her down the well, leaving her to lay there for weeks fused with the corpse of the human body he had just killed. To curse him, the Beldam used her magic to turn the father into the black cat with blue eyes, forcing him to live forever carrying the crushing guilt of failing to save his son. Decades later, Wybie's grandma recognizes this exact cat from her childhood when it used to watch over her missing twin sister and stare at the doll, knowing the cat's sudden reappearance means the Beldam is hungry for another child, which is the exact reason she rents the house to the Jones family as bait to protect her own grandson. Once the cat shifts its focus from Wybie to Coraline, the father's spirit inside the cat guides and helps Coraline throughout the entire movie to finally redeem himself for not saving his own son, which completely explains why the grandma is so horrified and shocked to see Coraline alive at the end of the movie because she knows the cycle isn't broken, the Beldam is still hungry, and the target is now locked right back onto Wybie.

My question is why didn’t the grandma just keep the key? It was just sitting in the drawer in the kitchen, she would never be able to open the door if it wasn’t there

Interesting take, but neither Wybie nor his grandmother were in the book. Cool idea for the book adaptation though.

I mean, if you actually watch the very beginning of the movie, she takes apart a doll that she already made and makes it into Coraline if you pay attention to the movie you would have known this👏👏

I said this to my mom the last time we watched it. That his grandmother had to be part of it. She acted surprised to see Coraline at the end of the movie, which made it seem like she had expected Coraline to have been taken by the Beldam. She let Coraline's family move in, knowing they had a child because she knew the Beldam needed another soul. Too much time had passed. Had Coraline not met Wybe, I feel like things would have ended very differently for her.
