Ironically enough, I find this to be a form of control. Not abusive control, necessarily, but control in the sense that you are entirely capable of doing the thing, you simply choose not to. There’s something psychologically compelling about having the ability to indulge and deliberately withholding it from yourself. That’s where I think the comfort comes in. It reminds me of those Catholic monks who willingly deprived themselves of food, sex, or other forms of human pleasure as an act of devotion. The deprivation itself becomes intimate. The restraint becomes its own kind of pleasure because it gives you a sense of closeness to whatever you’ve devoted yourself to.
