@syracusehistory: 300 Walnut Place - current home of TRI DELTA and former home of the Denison family. Built around 1900, the Denison’s lived here for two decades. Author Jeffrey Gorney wrote in “Syracuse University, An Architectural Guide,” that the house was “constructed solely for entertainment purposes.” Howard Denison was a known patent lawyer who grew up in Parish, New York and entered Cazenovia Seminary upon completing High School. He later transferred to Greenwich Academy in Rhode Island and settled at Wesleyan University. He eventually moved to Syracuse after working as a principal in Connecticut. Here, he connected with Cornelius W. Smith and began a law firm, Smith & Denison. He became a member of the bar of the Supreme Country and was appointed to the position of judge of the United States District Court under President Roosevelt. For many years, he was lecturer on laws of patent at Syracuse University. When he passed away in 1926, he left $750,000 in a trust to his son and two grandchildren. When TRI DELTA acquired the home around 1923, they added the doric portico. Today, the sorority consists of approximately 150 members, 30 or so that reside in the house. The name Dension can still be seen etched into the mounting block that sits in front of the home. #syracuse
