And the person she hopes will defend her tells her to stay quiet. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever protects his brother’s honor, Allah protects his face from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.” (Jamiʿ al-Tirmidhi 1931, Hasan) This hadith concerns defending another Muslim’s honour generally. Your Muslim wife is included. “But they’re my parents.” Allah commands believers to uphold justice even when it concerns themselves, their parents or close relatives. (Qur’an 4:135) The Prophet ﷺ also taught that helping someone who is oppressing another means stopping their oppression. Respecting your family includes helping them stop an injustice. (Sahih al-Bukhari 2444) “But what we said is true.” Gossiping about someone’s actual faults is ghībah. Inventing faults is buhtān, slander. “It’s true” does not make malicious gossip permissible. (Sahih Muslim 2589) Allah also condemns unjustly harming believing men and women as slander and clear sin. (Qur’an 33:58) You can speak respectfully and still say: “That accusation is unfair.” “Please hear her side.” “Please don’t speak about her that way.” LEGALLY: Reputation damaging allegations communicated to others may constitute defamation under Sections 499 and 500 of the Pakistan Penal Code, subject to evidence and statutory exceptions. Punishment can include imprisonment or a fine. Being a relative does not create blanket immunity. Defend her truthfully and fairly. She should not have to stand alone while you hear people attack her character. Sometimes protecting your marriage begins with a few calm words spoken at the moment she needs them.
