@thehistoricbeacon: He said it lightheartedly, but he was also genuinely not having it, the kids' accents and all. 😂 Cillian Murphy and his wife, artist Yvonne McGuinness, moved to London in the early 2000s and lived there for 14 years while Murphy built his career. Both of their sons, Malachy and Aran, were born in England, in 2005 and 2007, and had spent their entire childhoods there. In 2015, the family relocated back to Murphy's native Dublin. Speaking on the Armchair Expert podcast, Murphy explained one of the more unexpected reasons behind the move. "We were in London for 14 years. Both our kids were born there and we only came back to Dublin in 2015," he said. "It's kind of an Irish story, you know, to move away, do your thing and then come home. That seems to be a common narrative for Irish people." Then came the specific detail that made the story spread. "We wanted the kids to be Irish. They were sort of at that age where they were pre-teens and they had very posh English accents and I wasn't appreciating that too much, so we decided to come back." He wasn't entirely joking, but he wasn't fully serious either. It was clearly one factor among several, alongside wanting to be closer to aging parents back home and simply feeling it was the right time in life for the family to return. "Parents are at a certain age," he said, "and it was just a nice time to come home." Murphy has also spoken about never being tempted to move to Hollywood despite his career taking off. "I love visiting and I love the food and I do love the weather," he said. "I just feel European. I just feel Irish. I'd feel like a bit of an interloper if I lived in California. I couldn't envisage living there permanently."
