Tenant from hell cost me £30,000… This tenant didn’t pay my stepdad a single penny of rent for 9 months and eventually had to be evicted through the courts. During those 9 months of not paying rent, she reported my stepdad to the council claiming there were rats in the property. There had never been a rat problem at the property before she moved in, but the council still required him to arrange pest control. When pest control attended, they found food left everywhere and thick grease covering the worktops and kitchen surfaces. And that’s not even the worst of it… During her tenancy, she managed to go through approximately 20 toilet seats (I laugh now, but seriously how) and somehow even managed to pull the entire toilet pan away from the floor. Then, after months of waiting, legal proceedings and dealing with everything that came with this tenancy, we finally got the keys back. This is exactly how she left the property. Nine months without paying rent, a court eviction, pest control issues, damage throughout the property — and this is what we were left to deal with. I honestly don’t know how someone can leave a property in this condition and think it’s acceptable. Now comes the long, expensive job of cleaning, repairing and putting everything right again luckily I fully renovated the property bringing it back to life.
