Native Americans are the Indigenous peoples of North America, whose ancestors have lived on the continent for thousands of years, long before Europeans arrived. Their ancestors migrated from regions of northern Asia into the Americas during the Ice Age, when lower sea levels connected Siberia and Alaska through a region known as Beringia. Over many thousands of years, different groups spread throughout North America and developed hundreds of distinct nations, cultures, and languages. Native Americans were never one single group; they included peoples such as the Cherokee, Lakota, Navajo, Apache, Iroquois (Haudenosaunee), Choctaw, Cree, Anishinaabe, and many others, each with their own traditions and histories. Some communities lived primarily by hunting and gathering, while others became skilled farmers growing crops such as corn, beans, and squash. Large and complex societies developed as well, including the Mississippian civilization, whose people built enormous earthen mounds and major settlements. Native peoples also created extensive trade networks, developed different forms of government and diplomacy, and adapted to environments ranging from the Arctic to the deserts of the Southwest and the forests of the East. When Europeans began arriving in North America, they encountered numerous established Indigenous societies. European colonization brought warfare, forced removal, loss of land, and devastating diseases, which caused enormous population losses among Native communities.
