@englotforever05: Chapter 30 — The Lie “Mom…” Charlotte stood in the middle of her room. Her hand tightened around the phone. “What happened?” On the other end, Ms. Waraha couldn't speak. She looked through the glass door. Engfa was still lying in the hospital bed. The machines continued to monitor her. Her daughter was alive. But the words she was about to say felt like a betrayal. “Charlotte…” Her voice trembled. “There were complications after the surgery.” Charlotte's face immediately turned pale. “What kind of complications?” “The doctors tried everything.” “Mom, please.” Charlotte's breathing became uneven. “Tell me what happened.” Ms. Waraha closed her eyes. “The surgery itself was successful.” Charlotte released a shaky breath. “Then she's okay?” There was silence. That silence was enough to frighten her. “Mom?” Ms. Waraha began crying. “I'm sorry.” Charlotte's heart stopped. “No.” She shook her head. “No, don't say that.” “Charlotte…” “No.” Charlotte backed away from the bed. “Please don't say it.” Ms. Waraha covered her mouth. “The complications became too serious.” Charlotte's eyes filled with tears. “No…” “We lost her.” The phone nearly slipped from Charlotte's hand. “No.” She shook her head repeatedly. “No, you didn't.” Maya immediately stood. “Charlotte?” Becky rushed toward her. “What happened?” Charlotte couldn't answer. She stared at the phone. “Mom…” Her voice was barely audible. “You're lying.” Ms. Waraha closed her eyes. “I wish I was.” Charlotte's knees weakened. Maya caught her before she fell. “No…” Charlotte began crying. “No, Engfa can't…” She covered her mouth. “She promised me.” Becky wrapped her arms around her. “Charlotte…” “She promised she'd come back.” Her voice broke. “She promised me.” On the other side of the call, Ms. Waraha was crying silently. She had to force herself to continue. “The doctors did everything they could.” Charlotte shook her head. “I don't believe you.” “Charlotte…” “I don't believe you!” Her voice echoed through the room. Maya and Becky looked at each other helplessly. Charlotte grabbed the phone with both hands. “Let me talk to her.” Ms. Waraha froze. “What?” “I want to talk to Engfa.” Her voice trembled. “Please.” Ms. Waraha couldn't answer. Charlotte began sobbing. “Please, Mom.” “I just want to hear her voice.” Ms. Waraha closed her eyes. She looked at Engfa. Her daughter was still breathing. Still fighting. Still alive. But Charlotte didn't know. “I can't.” Charlotte froze. “Why?” Ms. Waraha struggled to speak. “Because…” She swallowed. “She's already gone.” Charlotte collapsed onto the bed. Maya sat beside her immediately. Becky held her hand. Charlotte stared blankly at the wall. Gone. The word repeated inside her head. Engfa was gone. The woman who had challenged her. The woman who had made her angry. The woman who had become her best friend. The woman who had become the person she loved most. Gone. Charlotte suddenly screamed. “No!” She grabbed the pillow and held it against her chest. “This isn't true!” Maya started crying too. Becky wrapped both arms around Charlotte. “Let it out.” Charlotte shook uncontrollably. “It's my fault.” “No.” Maya held her tighter. “It isn't.” “It is!” Charlotte cried. “She protected me.” “She took the impact for me.” Her breathing became heavier. “She should be here.” Becky wiped her tears. “Charlotte, please don't blame yourself.” But Charlotte couldn't hear her. “I should have been the one…”
