you should look into Junkins Alberta now known as Wildwood. It used to be an African pioneer settlement west of Edmonton.

Wow, I grew up in Alberta my whole life at one point I didn’t even know there was Black people there. Never mind our rich black community. They really buried us.

Yup yup! I’ve had to search and research about black history in Alberta cuz it’s not taught in schools. Born and raised in Alberta and we are taught about the Underground Railroad but never told what happened when those people came to Canada. But we have great black historical figures like John Ware.

And now all that’s left of Amber Valley is a plaque 😭 but there’s a beautifully kept Bethel Baptist cemetery near Campsie.

You should check out John Ware. He was the first black rancher/cowboy in south Alberta. You can go see and go inside his cabin in the dinosaur provincial park.

My great grandfather, a bi-racial man, left New Brunswick in 1920/21 and moved to Alberta where he lived for 17 years before returning to the East. I always wondered if he interacted with the existing Black community while in Alberta.
