@anxiouslyalej: You can do plenty of inner work when you are single. But there are some emotional wounds that are only healed relationally. This is called a corrective experience. You go through a situation that brings up a painful memory, but this time you’re in a safe environment, and you receive a healthy, unexpected response that heals something old. It works by giving you evidence of a new reality. My client has ADHD and she stims, a vocal stim, a phrase she repeats to regulate herself. In 2020 during lockdown she was stuck in the same place as her long-term partner, and she could tell by his body language it irritated him. She asked if she should stop. He said no. Weeks later he snapped and told her he needed to put a muzzle on her so she’d finally stop. She acted like she didn’t care and felt completely crushed. Six years later she was on vacation with a man she’d been dating for about a year. He sent her into his phone to airdrop the photos they’d taken by the pier, and she found an album called Cutie Stims. A handful of short videos, or her stimming and doing quirky things. All the old shame came up and she asked herself if he was holding it against her. She had carried that shame straight into a relationship that never gave her a reason to. When she confronted him he told her he loves that she does those things, and that on site the nights get so quiet he starts to miss her, so when he’s getting ready for bed he plays one of the videos because it feels like she’s there. He had no idea how much that healed in her. She’d told him she had ADHD, but never what happened with her ex. Some healing only happens inside the right relationship, and sometimes it looks just like this. Have you experienced anything like this? If so, leave your story below. I recently had my partner communicate that one of my ADHD symptoms was something that made him annoyed … I wish he had the emotional capacity to find them cute instead of embarrassing in public or annoying to him 😔😢

My ex used to be really annoyed at me stimming: rolling his eyes, scoffing, complaining, etc. It hurt me because that’s how I self regulate when I feel anxious and I communicated that. Instead of asking me if he could help, he preferred acting like this. Never again.

idk if this counts or not. but back then in my family's house, i always felt like i couldnt be myself. I cant cry when im feeling emotional bcos it's sign of weakness. Let alone things like sudden farting or burping it's a shameful action cos 'a girl isnt supposed to do that'. also in the workplace im in rn, i should never show any single sign of mistake or ppl (especially the cashier old lady) will gossip abt me to the other coworkers even the boss' wife. then i met my now fiancé. the first time i farted next to him i said earlier "go away i want to fart" but he was like "its ok u can fart next to me" and he just laugh after. He never laughed at me burping slightly like my mom always did. When i cried when i feel emotional like from watching a movie or telling him abt my past, he always hugs me. though we're doing LDR, when im sick he always send me meds and warm dishes thru delivery. I love to learn a new language and he send me to a good online course and he paid. We're planning our marriage on Nov 2027, may God bless us
