Dorothea Towles Church is often cited as one of the pioneering Black fashion models. Born in Texas in 1922, she moved to New York and began modeling in the 1940s, at a time when racial discrimination severely limited opportunities for Black women in fashion. She eventually moved to Paris, where she became one of the first Black models to gain significant success in the European haute couture industry. Church modeled for major designers and appeared in prominent fashion publications, helping challenge the idea that high fashion was exclusively for white models.
