It’s interesting bc a city like Charleston used to be a sort of Mecca of Southern culture, if you go today it doesn’t feel super southern and is clearly headed in the same direction as cities like Raleigh and Charlotte with cities like Atlanta and Nashville soon to follow - all of which are cities that are rapidly losing their southern identity and culture. It is interesting how liberal Yankees who are so concerned with “acceptance” have zero guilt about destroying a culture that is much older than their own.

Yeah, because it’s not the 90s or the 2000s. It’s 2026. Things change. Same reason why I don’t ride a horse to work.

my husband's job transferred him here about 10 years ago and they don't want anybody from the outside here I'm constantly told to go home and called a Yankee but I take pride in it. what I find funny about it all and I would have never said this if I hadn't been relentlessly harassed was I wouldn't be here if they had somebody in South Carolina capable of doing the job.

The wildlife and forest are being destroyed. SC should be protected . No more people need to be here . Keep what forest we have left.

The biggest betrayal of all is our own South Carolinians are agreeing to it to line their pockets.

I understand the concern about Charleston changing and longtime residents being priced out. But blaming “foreigners and out-of-towners” feels misplaced. Growth is complicated; welcoming new neighbors and preserving Charleston can coexist.

Big gov needs to stop allowing land development. I loved this state because of how wooded and green it used to be.

the thing that hurts my soul the most is that since more people have moved here Charleston has lost its color. It’s slowly turning into the modern grey black and white that you see everywhere. As a kid i used to love car rides because everything was so beautiful and vibrant, and so full of culture. now everywhere you look its apartment complexes and these GIANT houses, or more grocery stores and shopping centers. All the while the people who were BORN here are having to leave their homes because raise in property taxes, cost of living, ect. is making it impossible for them to afford the home they’ve had for YEARS.

At least you SC natives are not forced to learn a foreign language. I’m from California and if you don’t speak Spanish you are closed out of a lot of job opportunities. My nephew is an attorney and he had to become fluent in Spanish, luckily it took him only 2 years to become conversational.

Just wait. It’s going to turn from a red state to a blue state. I saw it happen to Colorado when all the people move in from the blue states and bring their politics with them. They forget why they left the blue state in the first place.

No place is like it was in the 90s and 2000s, none of this is unique to Charleston

Living somewhere desirable inevitably means growth. If you lived some place that sucked and never grew, would that be preferable?
