Nigel Farage has hit back at Labour plans that could put two £36 million donations to Reform UK at risk. The Reform leader insists the £72 million given by Christopher Harborne and Ben Delo is “100 per cent compliant” with current law. But proposed rules on overseas Pol*tical funding could be applied retrospectively from March 25, 2026. Under the plans, certain overseas donors and people who recently returned to Britain could be limited to £100,000 a year. A proposed one-year minimum residency rule could also affect when returning expats escape that limit. Farage refused to disclose whether Harborne and Delo were UK residents by the March cutoff, but said he was confident the donations comply with the law as it currently stands. Angela Rayner has said the new rules will be backdated. She added that donations falling outside the new requirements could have to be returned within 60 days. However, she has also said she does not know the two donors’ individual circumstances. Former prime minister Boris Johnson branded Labour’s response “absolutely pathetic,” accusing the party of hypocrisy because of its long-standing financial support from trade unions. Reform deputy leader Richard Tice made a similar argument, accusing Labour of trying to change the rules after the money had already been donated. Supporters of tighter limits argue that extremely wealthy donors should not have disproportionate influence over British Pol*tics. The Electoral Commission has advised parties to keep enough money available to return affected donations if the retrospective rules ultimately require it. Should a new donation law be allowed to apply to money that was legal when it was given? #NigelFarage #ReformUK #Labour #UKNews #Pol*tics
