Buried with Tutankhamun over 3,300 years ago, these two extraordinary daggers were discovered inside his tomb in 1925. One has a magnificent gold blade, while the other was forged from meteoritic iron—metal that literally fell from the sky. By: This is Ancient Curator’s-Note: Tutankhamun (alternatively spelled Tutankhamen and widely known as "King Tut") was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty who ruled during the New Kingdom period from roughly 1332 to 1323 BC. While his nine-year reign was historically minor, he became a global sensation after British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered his nearly intact tomb (KV62) in the Valley of the Kings in November 1922. 👑 Life and Reign * The Boy King: Tutankhamun ascended the throne at just eight or nine years old. Because of his young age, powerful advisors like Grand Vizier Ay and General Horemheb largely guided his administration. * Religious Restoration: His most significant political achievement was reversing the radical religious reforms of his father, Akhenaten. Akhenaten had banned Egypt's traditional polytheistic religion in favor of Atenism (worship of the sun disc, Aten). Tutankhamun restored the traditional gods, reopened damaged temples, and moved the capital city back to Thebes. * Physical Health: DNA studies and CT scans show that Tutankhamun was frail and physically disabled. He suffered from a cleft palate, a clubbed left foot (bone necrosis) that forced him to walk with canes, and scoliosis. * Death: He died at the young age of 18 or 19. For years, rumors of murder or an infected broken leg circulated. In 2010, scientists found traces of severe malaria parasites in his remains, suggesting a combination of malaria and degenerative bone disease cut his life short. 🏺 The Famous Tomb (KV62) Tutankhamun's legacy survives primarily because his final resting place escaped the rampant tomb-robbing that emptied other royal tombs over the millennia. Funded by Lord Carnarvon, Howard Carter spent years searching before uncovering the steps to KV62. Inside, they discovered an overwhelming collection of over 5,000 artifacts, including: * The iconic Gold Funerary Mask, made of over 10 kilograms of solid gold inlaid with semi-precious stones. * A nested series of brilliant gold sarcophagi and a solid gold innermost coffin. * Chariots, thrones, weapons, jewelry, clothes, and ritual items designed to aid the pharaoh in the afterlife. 🪄 The "Curse of the Pharaoh" Following the tomb's opening, media sensationalism gave rise to the myth of the "Curse of the Pharaohs". When Lord Carnarvon died a few months later from an infected mosquito bite, the press popularized the idea that Tutankhamun's spirit was punishing those who disturbed his rest. However, statistical studies show that the vast majority of the excavation team—including Howard Carter—lived normal, long lives after the discovery. Today, Tutankhamun's treasures are among the most visited artifacts in the world, housed in Egypt's premier museums like the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
