As the vehicle arrived, one of the officers standing nearby engaged in what Police Chief Gene Harris later called “horseplay.” The officer briefly removed his firearm, pointed it toward the officer seated inside the patrol car, and then returned it to the holster. In response, the officer inside the patrol vehicle also drew his firearm. While attempting to handle or holster the weapon, it accidentally discharged. The bullet passed through the patrol car’s windshield and struck the other officer in the left shoulder.
