@bigdawg_rn: Failed the NCLEX at 150 questions? Here’s what that ACTUALLY means. First, going all the way to 150 questions does NOT automatically mean you failed. The number of questions alone cannot tell you whether you passed or failed. The NCLEX is a computerized adaptive test. As you answer questions, the computer continuously updates its estimate of your nursing ability and compares that estimate with the passing standard, which represents the minimum ability required to practice safely and effectively as an entry level nurse. The test does not literally start you at “question zero,” but conceptually your ability estimate begins around the passing standard. As you answer questions correctly and incorrectly, that estimate moves and becomes more precise. The computer then selects questions targeted to your estimated ability. Once you reach the minimum number of questions, the NCLEX can stop when it is 95% confident that your ability is clearly ABOVE or clearly BELOW the passing standard. Above = PASS. Below = FAIL. But what if the computer still isn’t 95% confident? It keeps asking questions. And if you reach the maximum of 150 questions, the 95% confidence rule is no longer used. Instead, the NCLEX looks at your final ability estimate across the scored questions you answered. If your final ability estimate is at or above the passing standard, you pass. If it is below the passing standard, you fail. So if you failed at 150 questions, that does NOT mean you were hopelessly far away. It means that when the exam reached its maximum length, your final ability estimate was below the passing standard. And if you’re currently taking the NCLEX and it goes past 85 questions, do NOT panic. Your test continuing simply means the computer needs more information. Forget the question count and focus on the ONE question sitting in front of you.
