On July 30, officers responded to an argument at a party involving 25-year-old Jazmine Vann and her mother over Vann’s car keys. Police determined Vann was too intoxicated to drive, took the keys and warned her about the potentially serious consequences of driving. Vann’s sister, 20-year-old Ren-Tasia Broome, reportedly assured officers that she would drive instead. But prosecutors allege that almost immediately after police left, Vann retrieved the keys from her sister and got into the driver’s seat. With Vann’s girlfriend and children in the vehicle, prosecutors say Vann began driving more than 70 mph in a 30 mph zone while allegedly verbally abusing passengers. She reportedly ran a stop sign before crashing the Kia into a tree. Yasmeen, who was sitting in the backseat without a car seat or seatbelt, suffered fatal injuries. Her 7-year-old brother was also injured. Vann now faces a second-degree m*rder charge based on depraved indifference. Prosecutors say the grand jury upgraded the original aggravated vehicular homicide charge, alleging she acted with extreme disregard for human life. She remains jailed on $500,000 bond. Broome faces second-degree manslaughter for allegedly giving Vann the keys. Prosecutors say hundreds of her jail calls show she has taken “no responsibility” for her role. She remains held on $100,000 cash bail, $200,000 bond or a $300,000 partially secured bond. Vann’s girlfriend, Alejandro, previously pleaded guilty to criminally negligent h*micide and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors and testify if the case goes to trial. Yasmeen’s family described the 3-year-old as their beautiful daughter and said her 7-year-old brother is still recovering from his injuries.
