@skys.shutter.stories: 📍A second Flock Safety camera has been cut down at the intersection of 66th Ave. and Englewood Ave. in Yakima, WA. The south-facing camera at this same intersection was cut down in early August 2026. Now, a little over a month later, the north-facing camera has also been cut down. A follower notified Sky’s Shutter that the camera had been cut down. Based on what was reported, it appeared the camera had also been removed quickly afterwards, unlike the first one. This comes as videos and reports of people cutting down or damaging Flock and other automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras have been circulating online in other parts of the country. The trend has sparked discussions about these surveillance systems and the growing pushback against them. Flock Safety is one of the leading manufacturers of AI-powered license plate reader systems used by law enforcement. Other major companies in the ALPR space include Axon, Motorola Solutions, Vigilant Solutions, Genetec and Rekor Systems. These systems have become the subject of an ongoing debate over public safety, privacy and surveillance. Supporters say they can help law enforcement solve crimes, recover stolen vehicles and locate suspects more quickly. Critics argue that widespread collection of vehicle location data can create a dragnet-style surveillance system and raise Fourth Amendment and privacy concerns as well as contribute to the growing needs of data centers. There is also a cost when these cameras are damaged. When I contacted the Yakima Police Department about the first camera cut down in August, YPD stated that damaged equipment replacement costs caused by vandalism are the responsibility of YPD. The department said the cost would range from approximately $500 to $2,000 once Flock recovered the equipment and the extent of the damage was determined. It is not currently known what the final cost of repairing or replacing the first camera will be, or what the cost will be for this latest incident. The circumstances surrounding this latest incident, including who cut down the camera and when the damage occurred, are currently unclear. This is now the second Flock camera at this intersection to be cut down in just over a month. Neither have yet to be replaced.
