the manga and anime isn't that open minded about it considering half of the jokes is about her facing transphobia by people including ootani or being portrayed as predatory by kissing ootani or undressing without his consent but she is a truly heartwarming character in itself despite the tropes being problematic and is seen as a woman by risa which is great as well, especially in the manga that has a chapter that depicts her detransitioning bc of dysphoria and retransitioning after !

ngl i do wish that when/if lovely complex gets a remake (and i really hope it does as it's my favorite romance anime lmao) they are able to get a more progressive director on it because like i think that a lot of issues with Seiko can be easily fixed with just different dialogue choices or letting go of old (transphobic) jokes?? like that is very much doable and it would be sweet to actually do a character that many viewers can resonate with (since lets be honest quite a big portion of shoujo fans are queer, many being trans women probably) justice. all it needs is just a director that cares and like recently in anime sphere i think there are more better portrayals of trans characters than before so that is amazing (though i still long for a show where it is mc who is trans and not jist a side character:( )
