How well do you know Deiga Kwadzo Dei XI ? DEIGA KWADZO DEI XI: THE SOLDIER, THE CHIEF AND HIS LEGACY The Voice of Peki | Preserving Our History, Celebrating Our Heritage The history of Peki would be incomplete without recognising the life and contributions of Deiga Kwadzo Dei XI, a traditional ruler whose story combined military service, leadership and commitment to the development of his people. Known in private life as Seth Yao Tutu Brempong, he was born at Peki-Blengo to Wilfred Tutu Brempong and Madam Adzoa Glover. He received his early education at Blengo before continuing his studies at Kpedze and Mawuli Senior High School. His journey into public service began with his enlistment in the Gold Coast Army on 28 September 1955. In 1960, he served on a United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Republic of Congo. His military service brought him recognition for his gallantry, and in 1962, he received the Military Cross. On 8 May 1961, he ascended the Asamoa Stool as Deiga Kwadzo Dei XI, becoming the Paramount Chief of the Peki Traditional Area. He served for approximately four decades, a period associated with several efforts to advance the welfare and development of Peki. His contributions included efforts connected with the establishment of the Ghana-German Agricultural Settlement Farm at Agbate-Peki, the construction of Peki Government Hospital, and improvements in water and electricity supply. He was also among the traditional leaders associated with the establishment of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs. In recognition of his service and contributions, the Peki Traditional Council conferred on him the titles Katamanto and Gbedegbleme. His final years as a traditional ruler were marked by a chieftaincy dispute that delayed his burial. He died in 2009, and his funeral and burial were eventually held in February and March 2015. President John Dramani Mahama joined the chiefs and people of Peki to pay their last respects. Deiga Kwadzo Dei XI remains an important figure in the recorded history of Peki. His life invites present and future generations to reflect on the responsibilities of leadership, service to one’s people, and the preservation of our traditional heritage. As Peki continues to tell its story, remembering its past leaders is an important part of understanding the journey that has brought the community this far.
