*Starting air distributor* is basically the "traffic controller" for starting air on big diesel engines, especially 2-stroke marine engines. Its job: take high pressure air from the starting air receiver and send it to the right cylinder, at the right time, in the right firing order to turn the engine over. How it works step by step *1. Air supply comes in* Compressed air at 25-30 bar comes from the main starting air bottle through the main starting valve. When you hit "start", that valve opens. *2. Timing is handled by the distributor* Inside the distributor there's a rotating camshaft, usually driven by the engine's camshaft or by air pressure itself. This camshaft has lobes shaped for each cylinder. *3. Pilot valves open in sequence* Each lobe pushes a small pilot valve. When a pilot valve opens, it sends a signal of low pressure air to that cylinder's main starting air valve. Think of it like: distributor = small signal air, cylinder starting valve = big power air. *4. Main starting air valve fires the cylinder* That signal air pushes open the big starting air valve on top of the cylinder head. High pressure air then blasts directly into the cylinder when the piston is just after TDC on the compression stroke. That blast pushes the piston down and gives the crankshaft a turn. The distributor does this for each cylinder in the engine's firing order, 1-3-8-4-5-7-2-6 for example. *5. Engine gains speed and takes over* After 2-3 revolutions the engine is spinning fast enough. Fuel is injected, it fires on its own, and the main starting valve closes. The distributor stops sending signals. Key parts inside - *Inlet*: from main start valve - *Camshaft + lobes*: sets timing, matched to engine firing order - *Pilot valves*: one per cylinder, sends signal air - *Exhaust*: bleeds off signal air after each shot so valves can close Why we need it instead of just dumping air to all cylinders If you gave air to all cylinders at once, the engine would fight itself. The distributor makes sure only 1 or 2 cylinders get air at a time, and only when they can actually produce turning force. That’s why starting is smooth instead of a bang. On modern electronic engines, the mechanical distributor is often replaced by solenoid valves controlled by the ECS, but the logic is the same: timed pulses of starting air in firing order. #pelautpunyacerita #pelautindonesia #engineroom #pelautindonesiatiktok #pelautpemula
