@willteachfortacos: No gatekeeping here… The routine: teaching kids to build their own multiplication chart, from scratch, on blank graph paper… not handing them a finished one. Starting about a month into the school year, I taught my students how to make one from scratch. Once they had the hang of it, we built a brand new one every single week. We don’t fill in the whole thing at once. We start with the easy columns (2s, 5s, 10s) and build from there, adding a little more each week. Along the way, we use strategies like counting on fingers, drawing dots, skip counting songs, and using facts they already know to figure out the ones they don’t. By the time we’re deep into the school year, they’ve got a tool they built themselves, that they actually understand, that they can lean on for the harder math ahead. It’s not about whether or not they should have their facts memorized, it’s about giving them something that works either way.
