Belay Zeleke (በላይ ዘለቀ), also known as Belay Zeleke Kiltu, was born around 1912 in Bichena, Gojjam Province, Ethiopia. He came from a farming family and grew up in a rural environment. From an early age he was known for his courage, leadership, and deep patriotism. The Italian Invasion (1935–1941) When Fascist Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1935, Emperor Haile Selassie went into exile. Large parts of Ethiopia were placed under Italian occupation. Many Ethiopians organized armed resistance movements (known as the Arbegnoch, or “Patriots”). Belay Zeleke became one of the most famous leaders of these patriots, especially in Gojjam Province. Role in the Resistance Belay organized local fighters into disciplined guerrilla units. He carried out ambushes, raids, and sabotage against Italian troops and collaborators. He successfully controlled large parts of Gojjam, keeping Italian influence weak in the region. Belay also worked closely with other resistance leaders such as Negash Bezabih and Mengesha Jemberie. By 1940, Belay Zeleke’s forces were recognized as one of the strongest patriot groups in Ethiopia. Liberation of Ethiopia (1941) In early 1941, British and Ethiopian forces coordinated with the patriots to liberate Ethiopia. Belay Zeleke’s army played a key role in disrupting Italian supply lines and aiding the push toward Addis Ababa. After the return of Emperor Haile Selassie in 1941, Belay was appointed governor of Gojjam Province as a recognition of his service. Tension with the Imperial Government Despite his patriotism, Belay Zeleke soon came into conflict with the central government: He opposed corruption and heavy taxation in Gojjam. He resisted attempts by imperial appointees to take over his territory. His popularity and independent leadership style made officials in Addis Ababa suspicious. Arrest and Execution In 1944, Belay Zeleke was arrested after clashes with government troops sent to subdue his forces. He was accused of rebellion and disobedience. After a brief trial, he was executed by hanging in Addis Ababa on January 12, 1945 at the age of about 33. Legacy Belay Zeleke remains a national hero in Ethiopia. He is celebrated for his uncompromising resistance against colonial occupation and his commitment to justice even after the war. In Gojjam and across Ethiopia, songs, schools, and roads bear his name. He symbolizes patriotism, self-sacrifice, and resistance to oppression. #በላይዘለቀ #belayzeleke #oromotiktok #foryoupage #fyp @yordanos G 🇪🇹🇺🇸
