@scrollwithv: A carbide lamp is an old-fashioned lamp that produces light by making acetylene gas from calcium carbide and water. It was widely used by miners, cavers, cyclists, and workers before modern electric lighting became common. 🔥 How it works 1. The lower part of the lamp contains calcium carbide (CaC₂). 2. Water is slowly allowed to drip onto the carbide. 3. A chemical reaction occurs: CaC₂ + 2H₂O → C₂H₂ + Ca(OH)₂ 4. The acetylene gas (C₂H₂) travels through a small nozzle. 5. You ignite the gas, producing a bright flame. 6. The flame can produce surprisingly strong light for such a simple device. ⛏️ Why miners liked it Carbide lamps were particularly useful underground because they: * Produced bright light without batteries. * Could operate for several hours with the appropriate fuel/water supply. * Were relatively small and portable. * Gave miners a visible flame that could sometimes provide a warning of poor ventilation or certain gases—although they were not reliable gas detectors. The downside was that they produced carbon monoxide and other combustion products, and the carbide reaction left behind a wet residue of calcium hydroxide (“slaked lime”). Interesting fact: Acetylene burns with a very bright, relatively hot flame, which is why a tiny nozzle could produce enough light for miners to work in otherwise pitch-dark tunnels. #foryou #fyp #trending #tiktok #america
