Ben Shelton wants tennis officials to change the rules after losing to Alexander Zverev in the US Open final. Zverev beat the American in four sets on Sunday, but one part of the German’s serving routine became a major talking point. Throughout the match, Zverev regularly bounced the ball more than a dozen times before serving. Under current rules, players have 25 seconds to begin their first serve after the previous point ends. But there is no strict clock for a second serve. The rules only say it must be hit “without delay.” Shelton believes that should change. “I think that there should be some sort of rule… limiting time on second serve,” he said, arguing that long delays can be difficult for both players and fans. Shelton also pushed back after chair umpire Marijana Veljovic told him to get into position earlier while waiting to return Zverev’s serve. He said he should not have to remain crouched and ready for up to 30 seconds while Zverev goes through his routine. “I think that is a stupid rule,” Shelton said. Zverev’s serving habit has already drawn criticism from former stars including Andy Roddick and John McEnroe. Karen Khachanov also complained about it after losing to Zverev in the semifinals. Zverev, however, has said the long routine is not intentional. He said he does not count the bounces and does not know why the number has increased.
