Remember when everyone was absolutely OBSESSED with Gregorian chanting in the 90s? 😂 And I need younger people to understand that this was NOT some obscure medieval-music niche. We were ALL into it. You could walk into a Borders, a coffee shop, somebody’s weirdly sophisticated aunt’s house, or basically any store selling candles and incense, and there was a very real chance Gregorian monks were chanting ominously in the background.
“Gregorian” was a whole vibe. We had CDs with monks on the cover, Enigma playing in the background, crystal shops, waterfalls on the TV, and people sincerely describing music as “ethereal” while wearing approximately 14 pounds of black clothing. Nobody questioned it. We collectively decided that listening to men in robes singing in Latin was going to make us spiritually mysterious. 😂
And somehow it wasn’t even weird. It was COOL. You’d hear that deep, echoing HOOOOOOO— and everyone was like, “Yes. This is what my soul needs.”
The 90s really said: what if medieval monks, New Age spirituality, techno, incense, and existential angst all had a baby? And somehow we all went along with it. 😭
