There’s more to this. They are on the express track. Which in the middle of the track bed. Away from the platform. The train that hit them was an express train. It was not going to stop at that station. So it was moving at a higher speed than a local train which would have been slowing down to stop at the station. More will be revealed.

The Subways in NYC are unsafe in many different ways, Inside and outside the train cars. In some countries like in Brazil the subway stations have full-height platform screen doors that form a complete wall with doors that only open when the train stops, and inside functional cams.
