@good.politics: 💸 Abdul El Sayed on why he calls himself a capitalist: "I'm a capitalist who just understands capitalism. The term capitalism was coined by a guy named Adam Smith. And Adam Smith said there is no market without morals. He also said that the biggest danger to capitalism was not government regulation. It was monopoly. We've got monopolies and oligopolies up and down our economy. It is anti-capitalist." — @Abdul El-Sayed, Democratic Senate nominee in Michigan on the @stephenasmith show #abdulelsayed #stephenasmith #capitalism #adamsmith #michigan

Capitalism is fine so long as it's held in check. If you allow capitalism to run amok it will consume itself and everyone in it's way.

Back when I was a kid, most of my friend’s parents owned small businesses (and they all had vacation homes). They slowly all got gobbled up by big companies. If you want to MAGA, start there.

1) Adam Smith did not coin the term capitalism.
2) Monopolys are created through government regulations, there are no natural Monopolys

It’s also important to note that all the “socialist” countries like Norway are actually just capitalist countries with a better social safety net. Very few people want actual communism, just more checks and balances on capitalism, so we have less enshitification, better health outcomes & lower crime due to less abject poverty.

Pure capitalism doesn’t need government to bail out big corporations or give corporations tax breaks. Yet in the US, because politicians are paid for, Republicans have twisted the meaning of capitalism to mean tax breaks for the rich, deregulation and when big corporations screw up, just bail them out by borrowing to increase national debt.
