my family and i thrift shopped when i was a kid and it was “embarrassing” and this song actually made me feel slightly better lmao. i’m pretty sure it was one of the reasons thrift shopping started to be less looked down upon😭that’s why it matters how celebrities use their influence. i’m glad he’s continuing to use his for good

People really hated Macklemore when he was just out here like ‘gay rights, thrifting is cool, dancing is fun’

Thrift shop is was made me like his style. I liked the anti-capitalist message but it was still a relatively safe song to release. When he released same love I knew he was for the people. Nothing about that was pandering or “for” gay people. It was about something important. It was telling a meaningful story about love and prejudice and unnecessary hatefulness and bigotry. It was powerful and poetic and heart warming and stood against the general rap and hip hop cultural world in a profound and risky way. He’s always been a real one.

growing up, this song coming out meant a lot to me!! back then it was considered “embarrassing” to thrift and thats where many of my school clothes came from..thrift shop made me feel less uncool as a kid and exploded my current love for thrifting. 🩷

Yeah, I was always like. Why do people think Macklemore is a pop artist like he’s a very serious artist who knows what he’s talking about and cares about people and the issues. I thought that was obvious to everybody.

I remember how huge this song was when it came out, and I’m convinced it was responsible for the thrift surge in the late 2010s

if you haven't listened to his song "American" from 2009, before this song, I recommend it. He's ALWAYS been like this! He's got songs like White Privilege, Fked Up, Drg Dealer, so many that address The Machine. Ed Shereen just thinks out loud about the shape of you or some sht

Tuesday is thrift day for me. I get my vet discount on Tuesdays and I'm always looking for some sweaters to deconstruct 😁 At this point, 90% of our wardrobe is secondhand. 💯

My guy went viral because we all were like "haha, this song is so goofy"... he was anti-capitalist before the world started to realise that's the way we should be. Looking back now, it wasn't cool to laugh at people buying branded clothes, but now I often see folks talking about how they either avoid brands, or ONLY get them from charity (or Thrift, where applicable) shops. Then, as you say, he also stood for every right thing ever!

I grew up buying clothes from the thrift store with my mom taking me to Kmart or the mall to get stuff when it was tax free and honestly looking back as a parent I learned that skill of humility and being able to find gems in the thrift store for my kids for school. most of their clothes this year I bought from the local thrift stores or consignment sales because the quality of brand new stuff isn't great anymore
