Most logos are designed to be recognised. The best ones give you something to remember. Facebook has spent years refining its identity, but its brandmark has always been essentially the same thing. A lowercase F inside a blue shape. Simple, recognisable, but without much of a story. So I went back to where Facebook actually began. Zuckerberg originally built TheFacebook as a digital version of the student face directories used at Harvard. That gave me the idea. The story behind the name had been sitting there from the beginning, but the identity had never really used it. The new symbol brings that story to life. A face within an open book, with the familiar lowercase F hidden within the form. Three ideas combined into one simple mark that feels recognisable enough to belong to Facebook, but distinctive enough to finally give the brand some personality. I also refined the wordmark, keeping the lowercase approachability while introducing softer, more rounded letterforms, tighter proportions and a cleaner weight. The result is an identity that feels familiar without simply repeating what Facebook has already done for the last two decades. A great brandmark should work without needing its name beside it. On an app icon, a product, a screen or completely on its own. And for the first time, when you look at this Facebook symbol, you actually see Facebook. Follow for more value! 🚀
