But room and board still makes many of these schools unreachable financially. $16-24k year for housing/meal plan. Both of my kids went to a generous lib arts schools who provided free tuition through grants based on my single teacher salary, but we still had to take out big loans to afford them being there.

That's not radical. Swarthmore and many other colleges offer free tuition (at least) for under 200k household income.

When I applied for my MA in 2005, they wanted everything (besides the 10+ page writing sample) to be submitted on paper and written by hand!

I actually wonder if the families paying full tuition are paying for themselves plus 1-2 other students who are low income. These schools are costing upwards of $100k/year. It’s just cost shifting, whether those paying full tuition can afford it or not. For those of us who receive zero aid, this is frustrating. We cannot afford to pay this x 4 years.
