Good news: A bill to ban horse slaughter and the export of American horses for slaughter picked up its 232nd and 233rd cosponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday. We’re grateful to Reps. Luz Rivas and Ayanna Pressley for becoming the latest to go on record as supporting the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act. The stand-alone SAFE Act bill is one of two routes Congress could take to finally remove the threat of slaughter for all horses, wild and domestic. The second is language inserted into the surface transportation reauthorization bill that would ban shipping horses and other equines for slaughter. The bipartisan support for the SAFE Act will be enough to pass the bill if brought up for a vote. That backing also sends a strong message that the ban should stay in the transportation bill. Some want to profit from the suffering of our horses by defending this cruel industry. They are circulating letters on Capitol Hill, attempting to overturn the transportation language with misleading claims, and are planning an amendment to strip a slaughter ban from the final bill. You can help: Tap Take Action in our bio or go to https://returntofreedom.org/current_actions/ to send a message to all your members of Congress asking them to cosponsor the SAFE Act and anti-slaughter language in the surface transportation reauthorization bill. Call (202) 224-3121. Urge your representative to oppose any effort to remove the horse slaughter ban amendment when the surface transportation reauthorization bill comes up for a vote on the House floor. Why it matters: Last year, 25,050 American equines died in Mexican or Canadian slaughterhouses. The horse slaughter pipeline begins in auction yards. A handful of unscrupulous kill buyers profit from buying horses on the cheap, then shipping them over the border. Slaughter-bound horses and other equines endure grueling journeys to slaughter plants and an inhumane death. These include domestic horses as well as an unknown number of once wild and free horses and burros after being adopted or sold following government roundups. #endhorseslaughter #wildhorses #horse #savewild #animals #animalwelfare
