Why do some people feel like they’re being watched or followed? Sometimes, a person can experience an intense feeling that other people are watching them, talking about them, monitoring them, or paying special attention to them. These experiences can feel very real and overwhelming, even when there may be other explanations for what is happening. This can sometimes be connected to high levels of stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, emotional exhaustion, certain medications, substance use, or different mental health conditions. Everyone can experience suspicious thoughts from time to time, but when these feelings become frequent, intense, or start affecting everyday life, it may be a sign that it’s worth talking to a mental health professional. It’s important not to shame someone for experiencing these thoughts. Telling them to “just stop thinking about it” usually isn’t helpful. A calm and supportive approach can make it easier for someone to seek help and understand what they are experiencing. Having these feelings doesn’t make someone “crazy” or define who they are. Mental health experiences can have many different causes, and professional support can help a person understand them and find ways to feel safer and more in control.
