Yep. 😂 In Episode 4 of “What Did America Ask Canada to Give Up?”, we’re looking at one of the lesser-known issues in the Canada–U.S. trade negotiations: Canada’s Buy Canadian policy. And no, America wasn’t demanding that you stop buying Canadian-made products at the store. This is about something MUCH bigger: government procurement — the tens of billions of dollars Ottawa spends every year buying goods, services, construction materials and equipment with Canadian tax dollars. Canada says some of that spending should preferentially support Canadian companies, Canadian workers and Canadian industries. America says those preferences can disadvantage American companies trying to compete for Canadian government contracts. Fair argument. There’s just one teensy-weensy problem: America has been doing essentially the same thing since 1933. 😂 The United States has its Buy American Act. It has Build America, Buy America requirements. And Canadian companies can themselves be disadvantaged when competing for certain American government projects.
