Imagine taking a passenger on your motorcycle one ordinary afternoon in Ibadan—and never making it home. That was the nightmare that befell Abakuda, a commercial motorcyclist who picked up a passenger heading toward the quiet, bushy outskirts of Soka in 2014. It looked like an ordinary trip. But it wasn't. After entering the isolated area, Abakuda suddenly disappeared. His family had no idea where he was, and nobody knew what had happened to him. Then, against all odds, he regained consciousness. He was in complete darkness. Abakuda had been chained inside a small underground room, trapped beneath the earth with no obvious way out. But his captors had made one crucial mistake—they failed to find the mobile phone hidden in his pocket. With whatever strength he had left, Abakuda reached for the phone and called his family. His voice was faint and desperate. He told them he had been kidnapped and was being held somewhere underground. Then the call suddenly ended. His family refused to sit and wait. Local motorcycle riders, relatives, and concerned residents formed a search party and headed toward Soka, desperately trying to trace where Abakuda had disappeared. As they pushed through the thick vegetation, they came across a strange compound that appeared abandoned. But when they entered, they discovered something far more horrifying than anyone could have imagined. Beneath the compound was a network of underground rooms. Inside were severely weakened people who had been chained and left in terrible conditions. There were also decomposing bodies, human remains, dried blood, clothing, documents, and personal belongings that suggested many victims had passed through the place. What initially looked like a hidden kidnapping site appeared to be something much bigger—a disturbing operation linked to ritual activities and the trafficking of human body parts. The discovery sent shockwaves across Oyo State. Thousands of angry residents took to the streets, demanding to know how such a horrifying place could have existed for years without being uncovered. Questions quickly followed. Who was behind the operation? Who was funding it? And how many people had disappeared into Soka without ever being found? The authorities eventually took control of the property. The structures were demolished, and the land was later put to public use, including the development of a school. But destroying the buildings could not erase what had happened there. The name Soka became permanently associated with one of the darkest discoveries in Ibadan's modern history—a place where ordinary people allegedly disappeared, while whatever was happening underground remained hidden from the outside world. And perhaps the most disturbing question remains: How could something this horrifying exist for so long… without anyone knowing?
