After watching Dorothy, I had one question: Why did so many people accept Sathar in Paava Kadhaigal, but struggle to accept Dorothy? Thangam doesn't love Sathar romantically; she sees him as her best friend. But in Dorothy's story, Karthi's friendship turns into love, and that's where society's acceptance becomes complicated. We celebrate friendship turning into love in feel-good films like Oh My Kadavule and Thiruchitrambalam. We cheer when people overcome obstacles to be together. But when a transgender person is involved, why does the narrative suddenly become about sympathy, sorrow and tragedy instead of allowing space for genuine love? Why must a transgender person's love story always be about suffering? Why can't it simply be about two people falling in love? Society may accept violence in the name of honour, yet struggle to accept someone living authentically as a transgender person. If someone isn't hurting anyone and simply wants to live with dignity and love, what is wrong with that? Whether it's love or gender identity, every human being deserves dignity, respect and the freedom to live without fear. A transgender person doesn't need our pity. They deserve the same freedom to love, be loved and live their life as anyone else.
