When the Himalayas melt, the consequences can unfold within minutes. Yesterday’s disaster in Nepal showed just how fragile the balance is in the world’s highest mountains. It all began high in the Himalayas. A section of a glacier collapsed, sending an enormous mass of ice, rock and sediment crashing into the valley. The debris blocked the river, creating a natural dam. When that dam eventually gave way, the water turned into a devastating wave of mud, rocks and ice that rushed down the valley towards Nepal. And this is where climate change comes into the picture. Himalayan glaciers are retreating and losing ice as temperatures rise. Warming is also contributing to the destabilization of high-altitude slopes, ice and permafrost. This does not mean that every individual disaster can be directly attributed to climate change. But it does mean that we are changing the conditions under which these dangerous processes can occur. Nepal is once again reminding us that climate change is not only about hotter days. It is also about changing the behaviour of mountains, glaciers and water. And when that balance is disrupted, the consequences can arrive very quickly. #PRAYFORNEPAL
