James Ortiz was able to take a deliberately processed, imperfect translation voice and make it feel like a fully inhabited character, and made a non-human communication system feel emotionally true, while Ryan Gosling did the same by performing and likely actually engaging in adaptation. And it really showcased something that audiences may all instinctively understand but can be difficult to articulate unless you’ve taken a lot of acting classes; vocal choice is character choice.
